Biography

Alice Nellis was born in České Budějovice. She studied computer technology at the Grammar school in Poděbrady. Then she started to study flute at the Prague Conservatory and at the same time she studied English and American studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the Charles University. After graduation she worked as a translator and a musician. In 1996-2001 she studied scriptwriting and dramaturgy at FAMU. During her studies she shot short documentaries for the Czech television. In 2000 she came out with her first full-length film EENY MEENY, in 2002 followed by a comedy Výlet (Some Secrets), which earned the Czech Lion nomination, and in 2007 she shot a psychological micrography Tajnosti (Little Girl Blue). This film was awarded the price Český lev for the best shot of 2007 and for the best camera. In 2010 there was a premier of her film Mamas and Papas and a film Lidice started to be shot, based on her scrip. She directed plays Perfect Days (L. Lochead), Záplavy (Flood) (A. Nellis) at the Theatre Na zábradlí, at the Theatre Bez zábradlí she directed plays Láska (Luv, M. Schisgal), Když tančila (M. Sherman) and 2003 The Long Day’s Journey into the Night (E. ONeill), at Černá labuť Human voice (J. Cocteau) etc. As an actress she appeared in Martin Šulík’s film Sluneční stát (City of Sun). Her films were awarded a range of significant awards at international film festivals such as in San Francisco, Syracuse, San Sebastian, Venice, Bergamo, Karlovy Vary or in Sochi. For the NT Opera she prepared Glass’ Les Enfants Terribles, Václav Kašlík’s Krakatit and the double bill Mozart … and the Others.
