Markéta Cukrová

Biography

The Czech mezzo-soprano Markéta Cukrová is a guest of the National Theatre in Prague, where she made her debut in 2007 as Eurydice in Monteverdi's L’Orfeo. She also portrayed  Eustazio in Handel's Rinaldo, a Foolish Virgin and the Maiden in Martinů’s The Miracles of Mary, and the Little Arab and the Messenger in Martinů's Juliette.

She appeared as Dardano (Handel: Amadigi di Gaula) at the Händel-Festspiele in Göttingen, Germany, and was subsequently invited to give a solo festival recital. This was followed by guest performances at opera houses in Košice (Handel: Alcina), Brno (Purcell: Dido and Aeneas, Saariaho: L'Amour de loin, Rossini: Le comte Ory, Offenbach: Les contes d’Hoffmann, Ivanović: The Monument) and Ostrava (Britten: The Rape of Lucretia, Gluck: Iphigénie en Aulide). She is a sought-after interpreter of vocal music from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Her long-standing success in early music performance has led to collaboration with renowned national and international ensembles, including La Risonanza, Mala Punica, Les Muffatti, Collegium Marianum, Collegium Vocale Gent, Collegium 1704, Musica Florea, Ensemble Inégal, Orkiestra Historyczna and the Göttingen Festival Orchestra, with whom she has made more than 20 recordings.

In recent years, she has been nominated for the Thalia Award for the role of the Wanderer in L'Amour de loin, the Jantar Award for Artists of the Moravian-Silesian Region for the portrayal of Bianca in The Rape of Lucretia, and the Classic Prague Awards in the Concert Performance category. A distinguished educator, she teaches vocal technique and vocal music performance.
