Viva Puccini, a century of timeless operas
23/10/2024
November 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, one of the most acclaimed and influential composers in the history of opera. At the State Opera and the National Theatre, we have prepared a showcase of his most famous operas Turandot, La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly with an amazing cast performed by excellent orchestras.
Puccini's work reflects the power of romantic opera linked to the stories of ordinary people. Puccini was a master of atmosphere! He was able to draw the audience into a world of detailed characters, especially female characters. His "women" – Manon Lescaut, Mimì, Tosca, Cio-Cio-San, Liu – are complex characters who often go through great suffering. At the same time, they are courageous, passionate and determined. Whether they were real heroines from everyday life or fairy-tale characters, he was able to portray the complexity of their inner world, thus securing them a firm place on the imaginary operatic map.
Puccini's famous melodies and arias will win your heart, whether you are an opera fan or a beginner. Let us convince you in November at the National Theatre and State Opera. See you soon!

About operas
La Bohème is a heart-breaking story of young love and tragic loss set in Parisian bohemian life. Mimì, a modest seamstress, is fragile yet with dignity. Her tender love for Rodolfo is at the heart of the opera, and her sudden death shows the quiet strength and self-sacrifice of Puccini's heroines.
Madama Butterfly tells the tragic love story of a Japanese geisha and an American marine officer. Cio-Cio-San is one of Puccini's most tragic heroines. The opera explores themes of cultural clash and the devastating consequences of love and abandonment. While Cio-Cio-San was previously seen as a victim of naivety, modern interpretations often emphasise her tragic nobility and inner strength, with her final act seen as a powerful statement of dignity in the face of betrayal.
Tosca is one of Puccini's most intimate and dramatic operas. It retells the life story of the passionate opera singer Floria Tosca, who fights to save her lover, the painter Cavaradossi, from the insidious police chief Scarpia. This tragic story full of passion, jealousy and beautiful music.
Turandot, the composer's unfinished opera, known for its dramatic breadth and the famous aria "Nessun dorma". Turandot is Puccini's most enigmatic character. Unlike his earlier heroines, Turandot begins as a cold and cruel figure punishing the men who try to win her heart. As the opera progresses, her heart softens and reveals a transformation from cruelty to love.
