About operas

Libuše (Bedřich Smetana) occupies a truly special position in Czech opera and culture as a whole. It is directly connected with our ancestors’ endeavour to restore Czech statehood and independence. It was written for the inauguration of the National Theatre in Prague, a dreamt-of artistic institution, which foreshadowed the later foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic itself.

Dalibor (Bedřich Smetana) is loosely based on the popular tale of Dalibor, a knight who passed his time in jail by playing the violin. Yet the main subject of Bedřich Smetana’s opera is the question of to what degree one has the right to take the law into his/her hands.

Schwanda the Bagpiper (Jaromír Weinberger) is fabulous – and truly folksy – opera garnered ovations at many theatres in Europe. As translated by Max Brod in 1931 Schwanda the Bagpiper was even staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
