Biography
Guest of the National Theatre Opera.
Andrew Greenan was a Choral Scholar at St John’s College Cambridge, where he read Modern Languages. He also studied with John Cameron at the Royal Northern College of Music. He made his professional operatic debut in Schoenberg's Die glückliche Hand at La Scala, Milan.
Formerly a Company Principal at English National Opera, his many roles at the Coliseum included Heinrich (Wagner: Lohengrin), Timur (Puccini: Turandot), Rocco and Don Fernando (Beethoven: Fidelio), Verdi’s Monterone and Sparafucile (Rigoletto) and Zaccaria (Nabucco), Swallow (Britten: Peter Grimes), Sarastro (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), Gremin (Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin). For the Royal Opera Covent Garden he has sung Swallow (Peter Grimes) with Sir Charles Mackerras, Verdi’s Pietro (Simon Boccanegra) with Georg Solti and Tom (Un ballo in maschera), Crespel (Offenbach: Les Contes d’Hoffmann) with Richard Hickox and others.
Performances in Europe include Bottom (Britten: A Midsummer Night’s Dream) at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Abimélech (Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila) for New Israeli Opera, Swallow (Peter Grimes) for Hamburgische Staatsoper, Sarastro at the Wiener Volksoper, Strauss’s Count Waldner (Arabella) at the Théâtre du Châtelet and Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier) in Nancy, Wagner’s König Marke (Tristan und Isolde) at Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo and Water Gnome (Dvořák: Rusalka) for the Wexford Festival. Concert performances have included Wagner’s Gurnemanz (Parsifal), Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and Wotan (Die Walküre and Das Rheingold). He made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Heinrich (Lohengrin) in 2006.
Andrew Greenan's comprehensive concert repertoire includes performances of Bach‘s Magnificat and St Matthew Passion in Spain; many performances of Verdi‘s Requiem, Dvořák's Te Deum, Puccini's Messa di Gloria, and appearances with the English Chamber Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
He has recorded The Bonze (Le rossignol), God (The Flood) and Teiresias (Oedipus Rex) with the Philharmonia for Robert Craft’s Stravinsky Series and the Grammy Awared-winning recording of Berlioz Les Troyens with the LSO Live and Sir Colin Davis.
