Biography
The Austrian lighting designer Bernd Purkrabek will be making his National Theatre debut in the 2022/23 season (Zemlinsky’s Kleider machen Leute at the State Opera). He studied in Munich and during this time assisted Åsa Frankenberg and Reinhard Traub in numerous music-theatre projects. Since 2007, he has designed lightning for productions by Christof Loy (Der Prinz von Homburg, Macbeth, Jenůfa, Les vêpres siciliennes, The Enchantress, La fanciulla del West, Maria Stuarda and Peter Grimes), Claus Guth (Saul, Orlando, Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Jephtha, Lazarus, SehnSuchtMEER), Jan Philipp Gloger (Così fan tutte, Der Rosenkavalier and the double bill Eine Florentinische Tragödie / Gianni Schicchi), Jetske Mijnseen (L’Orfeo, La divisione del mondo), and other stage directors. Purkrabek received a Knight of Illumination Award nomination (2017) for his lighting design for Gloger’s production of Così fan tutte at the Royal Opera House in London.
