Jan Bubák studied conducting at the Prague Conservatory, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. In 2009, he attended master classes at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. From 2007 to 2009, he conducted the Prague Student Orchestra. He also served as assistant conductor at the F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec (productions of C. M. Weber’s Der Freischütz and G. Verdi’s La traviata). Between 2012 and 2014, he was engaged as a conductor with the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb (Verdi’s Aida, Wagner’s Lohengrin, Donizetti’s L'elisir d'amore, Bellini’s Norma, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Janáček’s Jenufa, Thomas’s Hamlet, Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and other performances). He was the first ever foreigner to conduct in Zagreb the Croatian national opera Nikola Šubić Zrinski. Furthermore, Bubák participated in the staging of the Czech premiere of A. L. Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera (2014). From 2014 to 2016, he worked at the South Bohemia Theatre, where he also conducted the modern-time premiere of Vojtěch Hřímalý’s The Enchanted Prince, the first Czech fairy-tale opera. In 2015, he was a repetiteur for a production of Janáček’s Jenufa at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
