Javier Torres
Biography
Javier Torres was born in 1963 in Mexico City. He completed his training as a Dance in 1984, and in 1988 finished his training as a dance teacher at the National School of Ballet in Mexico City. In 1988, Torres was awarded a scholarship by the German Ballet International foundation, which allowed him to travel across Europe. There, he continued his training by participating in various dance courses and contemporary and classical dance performances. He also performed in Polish Theatre of the New Dance.
In 1989 he moved to Finland to work with Jorma Uotinen at the Helsinki Dance Company. Three years later he became a member of the Finnish National Ballet, where he stayed on until 2008. During this time, he danced in ballets such as La Bayadère (ch. N. Makarova), Don Quixote (ch. P. Bart), Giselle (ch. S. Guillem), Swan Lake (ch. V. Bourmeister), Sleeping Beauty (ch. R . Nurejev), Romeo and Juliet (ch. J. Cranko). He has been working as a choreographer since 1984 and since arriving in Finland, he created more than 25 works, some of which are full-evening ballets. His most well-known works created for the Finnish National Ballet include Boleros (1995), Wind Statues (1997), Poppies (2001), Liquid (2001), Light Shock (2003) and Sleeping Beauty (2008).
Javier Torres has lectured at many international dance and medici symposiums and conferences, e.g. in Helsinki (2001), London (2003), Munich (2005) and Basel (2007). Based on his research in the area of improvement of ballet pedagogy, he leads seminars involving both psychological, as well as medical aspects.
Javier Torres is currently working as a freelance teacher and choreographer for professional ballet companies, including the Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet Culberg, Nacho Duato Dancing Company, Norwegian National Ballet, Netherlands Dans Theater, Lyon Opera Ballet and the Ballet of the National Theatre in Prague.
