Biography

Kay Link will make his debut at the National Theatre in November 2024 with a production of Zdeněk Fibich's opera Šárka.
Since 2000 he has been working as a freelance opera director. He has staged productions at the Theater an der Wien, the Leipzig Opera, the Aalto-Musiktheater in Essen, the state theatres in Darmstadt and Cottbus, theatres in Regensburg, Cologne, Leipzig, Linz, Bielefeld and Hannover, among others. His productions have also been performed at the Handel Festival in Halle, the NOW! and the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad. His production of Britten's Peter Grimes in Leipzig was met with great international acclaim. His Essen production of Aribert Reimann's Medea (with musical direction by Robert Jindra) has been awarded several times as the "best production" of the season in the Welt am Sonntag critics' poll. The critics of Deutschlandfunk Kultur also ranked his interpretation of Le nozze di Figaro among the outstanding productions of the year. His concentration on acting and conceptual sharpness are often in demand in drama, Link's directorial style, always developed from the relevant score, leads to musically precise character direction.
In addition to his directing work, Link lectures at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and teaches at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden. Several of his plays have been published by various major theatre publishers. He studied literature, art history, history and sign language in Frankfurt am Main and London.
