Lothar Baumgarte

Biography

Lothar Baumgarte, a native of Eisleben, has worked as a freelance lighting designer since 1986. Since 1992 he has regularly collaborated with Frank Castorf at the Volksbühne in Berlin (Dostoevsky: The Idiot, Bulgakov: The Master and Margarita, Williams: The Final Stop America, Brecht: In the Thickets of Cities, Döblin: Berlin Alexanderplatz, Céline: North, Dostoevsky: Duel). He has collaborated on opera productions with Peter Konwitschny (Wagner’s Götterdämmerung and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in Stuttgart), Jean Jourdheuil (Mozart’ Idomeneo in Stuttgart and Così fan tutte in Geneva), Nigel Lowery (Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito in Berlin, Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale in Barcelona, Bernstein’s Candide in Antwerp, Rameau’s Platée in Amsterdam), with Johan Simons (Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra in Paris, Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail in Amsterdam), and with Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito (e.g. Halévy’s La Juive, Janáček’s Katya Kabanova). He has also worked on many dance productions.
