Demisoloist of The Czech National Ballet

Biography

Charming Nina Fernandes of Brazilian roots enchants with her sparkle, unusual temperament and almost electrifying dancing. Before joining the Czech National Ballet, she gained professional experience in Rio de Janeiro, Houston Ballet and Miami City Ballet. Endowed with natural beauty she excels in both classical and contemporary repertoire, demanding lightness, elegance and at the same time precision and focus on detail.

A native of Brazil, Nina's early years of ballet training happened in Campos, Rio de Janeiro. In 2014 she was among the top 12 dancers to represent Brazil at the Youth America Grand Prix in New York and in the same year she was also awarded two Silver Medals at the World Ballet Competition in Orlando where she received her pre-professional offer at the prestigious Washington Ballet.

For the season 2016/17 she joined Houston Ballet as a member of the main company where she appeared in productions such as Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling, Christopher Wheeldon’s Carrousel, George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations and Symphony in C, Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit.

Two seasons later she joined Miami City Ballet, a preeminent company in the Balanchine technique. There she performed many solo and leading roles in Balanchine’s The Nutcracker and Jewels, in Alexei Ratmansky’s Symphonic Dances and Swan Lake and others. In 2020 she was awarded Star of the Corps by Pointe Magazine for her debut as the Firebird in Firebird by Balanchine & Robbins.

Nina joined the Czech National Ballet in 2023 as a demisoloist. In her first season, she already danced numerous roles including solo parts, always with convincing technique and inspiring liveliness:  Klara in The Nutcracker - A Christmas Carol (Y. Vámos), Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Olga in Onegin (J. Cranko), Sister in The Cinderella (J.-Ch. Maillot). In her first season with the Czech National Ballet, she danced unbelievable six significant female roles in The Sleeping Beauty (M. Haydée): she starred as Aurora, the Lilac Fairy, Fairy of the Golden Wine, Fairy of the Enchanted Garden, Princess Florine in the Bluebird pas de deux and Emerald variation.  

She additionally performed in modern and neoclassical ballets, such as Holo Harmonies (M. Bigonzetti), The Second Detail (W. Forsythe) and Moving Rooms (K. Pastor).
