Biography
Dance journalist and stage director Nina Vangeli had been for many years, in the seventies and eighties, a leader of an underground theatre group, working in the style of physical theatre. During that time productions like the Requiem (music by Antonín Dvořák), Mesopotamia (with verse by Richard Wiener) and Bardo Thedol based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead. In the early nineties she created for the “M” theatre in České Budějovice a tragicomic image of the time in A Journey to Prosperity or A Murder Needs No Publicity based on a real story when a child ordered a murder of its own mother. During the nineties she also started working in the operatic field, she contributed to the Best of Mozart project of the Chamber Opera, she directed on the small stage of the Kolowrat Palace opera The Minister by a contemporary British composer Roger Scrutton. In the Great Theatre in Plzeň she directed Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor nad Arrigo Boito’s Mephistopheles. Not until the change of political system in 1989 she could publish but since then she has become one of the leading dance journalists. She publishes a bilingual magazine Dance Zone and contributes to other culture periodicals.
