About the concert

Arnold Schoenberg was certainly one of the most influential music theorists and composers of the 20th century – and at the same time very close to Zemlinsky, whose brother-in-law he was. Schoenberg married Zemlinsky’s sister Mathilde in 1901, but had already had composition lessons with him before. He saw Zemlinsky as an important source of inspiration and remained in contact with him throughout his life. Zemlinsky not only sponsored his works, but also those of composers from Schoenberg’s Viennese circle, especially Alban Berg, whose works he helped to bring to public attention. The concert tells the stories of Zemlinsky, Schoenberg and his ’School’. Works by this three composers will be played.

Programme:
Alban Berg: Three pieces from the “Lyric Suite”
Alexander Zemlinsky: Six songs after poems by Maurice Maeterlinck, op. 13
Arnold Schönberg: Chamber Symphony No. 1 for 15 solo instruments, op. 9
