About

A unique dance and music composition about the body and nature – a ritual of beauty.
In the poetic landscape of corporeality emanating visually arresting images.

Utsushi is an artistically and thematically diverse production composed of excerpts from the major shows of Sankai Juku, a leading and globally renowned dance company. The showcase of Ushio Amagatsu’s choreographies created over more than thirty years includes key moments of the Japanese “flagship”. The Utsushi show mirrors life and nature in dance.

Roses of Sand (Shijima, 1988)
Watch, Look (Toki, 2005)
Hands of Darkness (Kinkan Shonen, 1978)
Parallel Shift (Hibiki, 1998)
Two Mirrors (Kagemi, 2000)
Echoes (Kagemi 2000)
Monads (Shijima 1988, Hiyomeki 1995, Yuragi 1993)

The Japanese dance company Sankai Juku was founded in 1975 by choreographer Ushio Amagatsu from the second generation of Butoh dancers. Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno belong to the first, “post-Hiroshima” generation. The beginnings of the expressive Butoh dance date back to the 1960s, when it emerged as a response to the development of contemporary dance in Japan. The dancers sensitively embrace the environment and the world as a whole to shake the depth of life through dance.

The world premiere was held at the CNCDC Châteauvallon, France, in July 2008.
