The National Theatre in Prague is one of the best-known cultural institutions in the Czech Republic. Its Neo-Renaissance building, designed by Josef Zítek, is one of the country’s major architectural landmarks, yet it has also played a significant role in the Czech nation’s history. On 16 May 1868 the cornerstone was laid on the site of the Provisional Theatre, by the end of that year the foundations were completed, and in 1877 the roof was built. In 1873, competitions for the building’s decorative elements were under way, according to the plan drawn up by a special committee led by the politician Karel Sladkovský. The National Theatre was inaugurated on 11 June 1881, during the visit to Prague of Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria. The first performance was the premiere of Bedřich Smetana’s festive opera Libuše.
