New Bartered Bride production in the National Theatre will allow spectators to take a peek behind the scenes

The Bartered Bride, a comic opera by Bedřich Smetana, will premiere its new production in the National Theatre on 26th and 28 May 2022. This will be the twenty-first production of this beloved piece in the history of the National Theatre.

National Theatre’s soloist, Kateřina Kněžíková, and the new Music Director of the National Theatre Opera, Robert Jindra, awarded the prestigious BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award for the world’s best recording in the category

Kateřina Kněžíková recorded her Phidyle album, published by Supraphon, together with Robert Jindra conducting the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra. She was previously nominated for the Czech Anděl Awards in the category of Classical Music and has now won the prize for the world’s best artist in the vocal category.

Mieczysław Weinberg’s Symphony No. 21 “Kaddish” scheduled for Czech premiere as a part of the Musica non grata project

Musica non grata

Musica non grata is a project aimed at rediscovering works by composers persecuted by the National Socialists. On Saturday 23 April, at 7:00 PM, Tomáš Brauner will conduct the National Theatre Orchestra at the National Theatre’s historic building, performing a Czech premiere of Symphony No. 21 “Kaddish” by Mieczysław Weinberg as a part of the project. The soprano Marie Fajtová will sing the solo part and the evening will be opened by Maciej Ruczaj, the director of the Polish Institute in Prague, speaking on the context of creation of the work.

The “self-made woman” at the State Opera

Musica non grata

As a part of the Musica non grata project, the State Opera will present Franz Schreker’s Der Ferne Klang after 102 years. Being one of the most famous operas composed in the first half of the 20th century, the piece will be directed by the twice Golden Mask Award holder Timofey Kulyabin as his Czech debut. Premieres are scheduled for 20th and 26th March with reprises on 29th March and 3rd and 10th April.

The passionate Carmen returns to the stage of the National Theatre in a new production

Georges Bizet’s Carmen is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. The National Theatre will present its new production of the piece on 10th and 12th of March. The story of Don José, a soldier, who succumbs to the lure of the Gypsy temptress Carmen, will be retold by the German stage director Grischa Asagaroff. Petr Popelka, the recently-appointed chief conductor of the Prague Radio Symphonic Orchestra, will be charged with preparing the musical aspects of the premiere. Costume and stage design was entrusted to the Italian artist Luigi Perego. The leading quartet of characters will feature alternatively Nana Dzidziguri and Ester Pavlů as Carmen, Luis Gomez and Michal Lehotský as Don José, Łukász Golinski and Svatopluk Sem as Escamillo and Kateřina Kněžíková, Alžběta Poláčková and Jana Sibera as Micaela.
