National Theatre Opera and the State Opera aim for new horizons in the new year: Leading opera stage directors to meet in Prague

In January, Prague will become the place, where leaders of today’s opera will meet: three world-class opera stage directors will be working in the Czech Republic at the same place and time. In addition, the National Theatre Opera and the State Opera prepared a “premiere festival” for this June. Also, our young spectators will have a number of educational programs to look forward to. The Musica non grata project will echo with Franz Schreker’s Distant sound (Der ferne Klang) and burst with Schulhoff’s Flames (Flammen). But lovers of the more traditional titles will not be left behind and will certainly be pleased by the new productions of Carmen and the Bartered Bride.

January Full of Premieres at the National Theatre Opera

The first month of the new year will see no less than three long-expected premieres at the National Theatre: Mozart’s Così fan tutte will open the season at the Estates Theatre on 8 January, Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer will arrive at the State Opera on 20 and 23 January and Katya Kabanova will close the month at the National Theatre on 28 and 30 January.

Country opera performed by the award-winning American ensemble Nature Theater of Oklahoma

In December, the Prague Crossroads will bring the very first opera by the legendary New York ensemble Nature Theater of Oklahoma. Burt Turrido: An Opera will be performed on Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th of December from 6 p.m. at the New Stage of the National Theatre. The directing duo Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska boldly analyses traditional structures and forms of the opera genre in order to put them into a new shape – with a great deal of humour. With their distinctive style, they tell a story of a castaway and an isolated society that saved him. The audience can look forward to a catastrophic storm, an immaculate conception, a mock execution, an alien invasion, a spectacular abduction – and this opera won‘t be over until finally somebody is impaled on a narwhal tusk!

Laterna magika´s comeback at EXPO

Laterna magika returns to the EXPO after 50 years with the performance Robot Radius, created specifcally for the world fair at the New Stage of the National Theatre in Prague. This contemporary and technically innovative work uses the real-time motion capture technology, enabling the dancers and musicians performing on the stage to have direct influence on the real-time projection on the screen. The EXPO visitors will witness a battle of the last man on the Earth versus a robotic technology gradually taking over the world. In our performance, artifcial intelligence does not take the form of a humanoid robot, but rather that of a system that plans to transform life into a virtual reality.
