What is The National Theatre’s approach to the climate crisis? What are we doing to reduce our theatre's carbon footprint?
The National Theatre in Prague is the largest theatre in the Czech Republic with a matching size of operation. We are keenly aware of our responsibility towards the planet and the environment, which is why we are working tirelessly to make our operation more effective and sustainable. Ecological transformation is one of the greatest challenges facing our theatre, and the entire globe, and we must not get left behind. Although the need for action has been accelerated by the energy crisis, principles of sustainability have already been applied to energy strategies, as well as set and costume production, the functioning of the entire institution, catering, and even interpersonal relationships.
For almost twenty years, The National Theatre has been a true pioneer in the field of energy savings (as you can see in the section on energy-saving technologies). We are currently committed to reducing our carbon footprint in further areas of operations. Our approach is based on the Theatre Green Book philosophy. We are proud to be their partners in a pilot sustainability certification project for European public institutions included in the European Theatre Convention. Based on this philosophy, the areas of ecological transformation are divided into three basic levels – sustainable BUILDINGS, sustainable PRODUCTIONS, and sustainable OPERATION. Being the principal Czech stage, The National Theatre wishes to be a positive inspiration for others – a catalyst for real changes. But to do so, it must first change itself. The individual sections will introduce all the activities we are currently engaged in and the radical changes we are implementing.
